Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, guaranteed on Saturday (29) that the country will maintain control of its oil following the new agreement signed with the United States. In a speech on state television, Rodríguez stated that "one thing must be completely clear: Venezuela retains ownership and sovereignty over its resources," directly rebutting the statements made by American President Donald Trump.
Rodríguez's declaration contradicts the announcement made by Trump on Friday (28), when he stated that the two nations had signed "the biggest oil deal in world history." The American president declared that the U.S. had "secured majority control" of Venezuela's more than 65 billion barrels in reserves, which, according to him, would double the United States' reserves.
For Rodríguez, the agreement with the U.S. aims to turn "cold and inert" underground resources into "a source of economic and social well-being for the people of Venezuela." She explained that the agreement involves $100 billion (R$519 billion) in private investments from American companies, with the goal of revitalizing the country's oil industry.
