Nepal: Government warns of rising water levels in flood-affected area

Nepal warned today about rising water levels in the Bhote Koshi river basin, where a flash flood on Wednesday caused almost 700 deaths in the country and the neighboring Tibet region.

The flood was caused by the collapse of a glacial lake, a phenomenon increasingly frequent in the Himalayan region due to global warming.

Nepalese authorities are monitoring the situation and alerting populations in riverside areas to potential risks of new flooding.

The incident affects both Nepal and the autonomous region of Tibet in China, which borders the South Asian country.
