"Climate justice must unsettle us": Nepal is not the biggest polluter, but is among countries that "pay the bill"

CNN Portugal29 August 2026 at 22:00

Nepal faces the consequences of a natural disaster that caused the death of more than 600 people, in a scenario that exposes the inequalities of the global climate crisis. Filipe Lisboa, climate change specialist, analyzes the relationship between climate change and this tragedy in the Asian country.

Nepal is responsible for a minimal fraction of global greenhouse gas emissions, not being among the countries that pollute the most. However, the country is among those that suffer most from the impacts of extreme weather events, paying a disproportionate price for the effects of a crisis it did not create.

The concept of climate justice is central to this analysis, highlighting the discrepancy between nations that contribute little to pollution but are severely affected by its consequences. This situation highlights the need for deeper reflection on the equitable distribution of responsibilities and costs associated with climate change.

Filipe Lisboa's analysis seeks to alert to the need to recognize that the most vulnerable countries, such as Nepal, should not bear alone the consequences of a climate crisis driven mainly by industrialized nations.
