Hospital de Leiria's emergency department adopts new triage model to reduce length of stay

Região de Leiria29 August 2026 at 21:10

The emergency department of Hospital de Leiria, integrated into the Local Health Unit of the Leiria Region, implemented a new triage model for patients about a month ago. The main change relates to the entry circuit of a patient in the emergency department, which was modified to improve the efficiency of care.

The most significant change was the creation of a First Nursing Observation Point. This point allows nurses to perform an initial assessment of patients' health status right at entry, before the usual triage process.

The objective of this change is to significantly reduce the length of stay of patients in the emergency department. By allowing a faster initial observation, the new model aims to speed up the care process and reduce waiting times.

This initiative comes in the context of ongoing efforts to optimize emergency services, which frequently face high demand and long waiting times. The new system was implemented approximately a month ago and is still in the adaptation phase.
