The British couple Patrick Joseph Tobin, 48, and Thomasina Tobin (née McArdle), 51, died drowned in Cullera while taking a bath in the jacuzzi of a luxury chalet they had rented with their two teenage children to spend a two-week holiday.
The victims became trapped by suction when the spa's drainage system became clogged, a type of accident that is one of the most common with fatal results in domestic spas and that has forced manufacturers to introduce additional safety systems to prevent them.
