More than 160 thousand users registered at health centres without entitlement to a family doctor

SIC Notícias29 August 2026 at 14:17

More than 160 thousand users registered at health centres in Portugal did not have entitlement to a family doctor. This situation was identified within the scope of a process to review user records in the health system.

The affected users did not meet the necessary conditions to keep a family doctor. The main reason was that many of these users lived outside the country but had remained registered at Portuguese health centres.

Another determining factor was the absence of any record of use of the National Health Service in the last five years. This means that these users did not use the NHS during this period, which raised questions about the real need to maintain their registration.

This situation highlights the difficulties in managing user records and raises concerns about access to primary healthcare in Portugal, in a context where many users still do not have an assigned family doctor.

Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal stated that the government requested specific assistance from friendly nations given the difficulties encountered by teams on the ground. Among the reinforcements are 11 professionals from India specialized in rescuing people trapped in tunnels, and more teams with this type of expertise are expected to arrive in Nepal from China. The state of degradation of the bodies, dragged by a flood of "density greater than concrete," makes identifying the victims difficult.

Change the form for green card application and the old version will be rejected

The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that a new version of Form I-485, used to apply for permanent residency (Green Card), will take effect on September 18, 2026, with no transition period. The new edition (09/18/26) will replace the previous version (01/20/25), and applications submitted with the old form will be rejected. The changes include new questions about financial situation, household income, assets, debts, education, and public benefits received, related to new federal "public charge" rules. Experts recommend that applicants verify the correct edition of the form and not leave the process until the last minute, to avoid delays in the immigration process.
