Bolsonaro's son insists father's trial was a sham and says he will grant him a pardon if elected

Euronews Portugal29 August 2026 at 13:20

Jair Bolsonaro's son, the far-right candidate for president of Brazil, reiterated in an interview with Rede Globo that his father's trial was a sham. In the same interview, the candidate stated that, if elected President of the Republic, he will try to obtain an amnesty for both his father and all those convicted for the attempted coup d'état.

If he fails to reach the necessary consensus to pass the amnesty in Congress, the candidate stated that he will proceed with a pardon as an alternative to benefit his father and the other convicted individuals in the process related to January 8.

The candidate's position reinforces the Brazilian far-right's strategy of challenging the legality of the convictions related to the events that resulted in the invasion of the headquarters of the Three Powers, in Brasília, in early 2023.
