Swiss trains already pass over a solar power plant

A railway line in western Switzerland has become a solar power plant, with panels installed between the rails that generate energy while trains pass over them. The pilot project is on a 100-meter stretch near the village of Buttes and includes 48 solar panels positioned between the rails at a height low enough for trains to pass without problems.

The installation was developed by the Swiss startup Sun-Ways and can be removed whenever track maintenance or construction work is needed. The generated power is 18 kilowatts, producing approximately 16,000 kilowatt-hours per year, energy equivalent to the consumption of several European households.

The project is still a pilot and aims to test the viability of integrating solar energy production into existing railway infrastructure, without the need to occupy additional land.
