Brazil's population reaches 214.2 million in 2026, with Roraima, Santa Catarina, and Mato Grosso driving growth

Brazil reached an estimated population of 214.2 million people in 2026, with growth of 0.37% compared to the previous year. This was the slowest growth pace in the last two years, falling below the rate of 0.39% recorded between 2024 and 2025, confirming a trend of demographic slowdown in the country.

Roraima, Santa Catarina, and Mato Grosso recorded the highest population expansion rates in Brazil. These three states were the only ones to exceed 1% population growth, a highlight that reflects distinct patterns of migration and regional development.

Among municipalities, São Paulo remains the largest in the country, with 11.9 million inhabitants, while Serra da Saudade, in Minas Gerais, is the smallest Brazilian municipality, with just 857 residents. The estimates have a reference date of July 1st.

The Population Estimates study, released by IBGE, serves as the basis for calculating the State and Municipalities Participation Fund by the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) and also guides the country's social and economic indicators.
