Cook bids farewell to Apple leadership and Ternus takes the helm with AI challenge

Eco29 August 2026 at 12:09

Tim Cook, who took over command of Apple after the death of founder Steve Jobs, is preparing to leave the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) on September 1, after nearly 15 years at the helm of the company, during which he transformed Apple into a $4 trillion giant. Cook, 65, will become Chairman of the Board, handing over command to John Ternus, current Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, who at 51 will become the third leader of the company in three decades.

Ternus has worked at Apple for a quarter of a century and participated in the development of the brand's main products, including the various generations of the iPhone and iPad, as well as the launch of AirPods, Apple Watch and Vision Pro. The choice of a leader from the hardware area indicates that Apple believes the future of artificial intelligence will go through integrated devices, such as smart glasses or AirPods with cameras, and not just the cloud.

However, the new CEO will face significant challenges. Apple has fallen behind competitors like Google, which has already integrated AI into its devices, or companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. Despite having presented "Apple Intelligence," features like the much-awaited Siri assistant update have suffered successive delays, highlighting difficulties in meeting current market standards.

In addition, the trade policy determined by US President Donald Trump will be another challenge for Ternus. Apple has built a vast supply chain centered in China, but this model is now vulnerable due to the deteriorating relations between Washington and Beijing. The company promised to invest tens of billions of dollars in chips manufactured in the USA for iPhones and add a Mac Mini assembly line in Texas, although most of its supply chain remains in Asia.

Data centers advance without national water and energy caps and Sines projects 1.2 GW capacity

The National Data Centers Plan, approved by the Government in April 2026, aims to accelerate data center investments in Portugal without setting binding national caps for water or energy consumption. The most emblematic project is located in Sines, in the Alentejo region, where the Start Campus Data Campus plans to reach a capacity of 1.2 GW, with an announced investment of 8.5 billion euros. The first unit (SIN01) became operational at the end of 2024 with 37.5 MW, while expansion SIN02 will project 200 MW. The company claims to use seawater for cooling, eliminating the use of freshwater. The plan identifies 2026 and 2027 as strategic years to attract investment decisions from major international operators, with electrical power availability as a central condition for Portugal's competitiveness.
