The Fronteira community, located in Macaé, in Northern Fluminense, is being swallowed by the sea. The place, which 30 years ago was described as a fishing village harmoniously integrated with the beach and the mangrove, now presents a scorched earth scenario due to the violent advance of the waters.
The frequent and powerful swells have been destroying houses and expelling most of the residents from the community. The two most recent swells happened this week, with images of water invading the streets that went viral on social media.
The newspaper O GLOBO visited the community this Friday to observe the situation and hear from the few residents who still resist in the area. Many of those who had the financial means moved to safer places, while others received support for rent payments.
