Fixed Telephony: Next-Generation Network Coverage Reaches 96% of Users

Notícias Portugal29 August 2026 at 10:52

A recent survey revealed that 95.8% of fixed telephone access in Brazil already use advanced technologies, such as fiber optic, cables, and fixed mobile networks. This percentage represents a significant shift in consumer behavior and in the evolution of the country's telecommunications infrastructure.

Analog access, which for a long time was the basis of fixed communications, now represents only 1.9% of the total. This drastic reduction evidences the obsolescence of older technologies and the growing demand for services with higher speed, stability, and connection quality.

Industry experts highlight that migration to new services not only improves user experience but also drives innovation in the market, creating opportunities for companies seeking to adapt to modern consumer needs. With the high penetration of digital access, operators are expected to continue investing in infrastructure.

The scenario reflects a natural evolution in the Brazilian telecommunications sector, which seeks to keep pace with global changes in technology and connectivity. The expectation is that, in the coming years, the adoption of digital services will continue to increase, consolidating the fixed telephone as a tool integrated with new forms of communication.

Data centers advance without national water and energy caps and Sines projects 1.2 GW capacity

The National Data Centers Plan, approved by the Government in April 2026, aims to accelerate data center investments in Portugal without setting binding national caps for water or energy consumption. The most emblematic project is located in Sines, in the Alentejo region, where the Start Campus Data Campus plans to reach a capacity of 1.2 GW, with an announced investment of 8.5 billion euros. The first unit (SIN01) became operational at the end of 2024 with 37.5 MW, while expansion SIN02 will project 200 MW. The company claims to use seawater for cooling, eliminating the use of freshwater. The plan identifies 2026 and 2027 as strategic years to attract investment decisions from major international operators, with electrical power availability as a central condition for Portugal's competitiveness.
