For decades, thousands of women and girls in Greenland received intrauterine devices (IUDs) without their knowledge and without having given consent. This practice lasted several years and affected a significant number of people in the Danish autonomous region.
Some of the affected women only discovered years later that the device had been fitted on them, often after suffering pain and other health problems related to the non-consensual procedure.
The government of Denmark, the country responsible for the administration of Greenland, announced that it will financially compensate the women and girls who were subjected to this practice without their consent, thus recognizing the gravity of the violation of their reproductive rights.
