LORDELO WANTS MEASURES TO STOP FLOODS AND WATER RUNOFF FROM SERRA DO ALVÃO

Canal N – Notícias – Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro29 August 2026 at 09:27

The Parish Assembly of Lordelo, in Vila Real, received a recommendation proposal to evaluate and prevent risks associated with rainwater runoff from the slopes of Serra do Alvão. The initiative was presented by Bruno José da Silva Alves, elected through the movement Juntos Por Lordelo, following several incidents recorded in the parish between September 2025 and August of this year.

Floods, flash floods, erosion and dragging of earth, mud and stones affected different areas, namely M313, Bairro das Cales, Bairro do Conho, Giesteira, Ribada and Bairro da Cal. The records collected also show situations of water accumulation and sediment deposition near roads and dwellings.

Given the repetition of these episodes, the proposal advocates for a joint technical assessment between the Parish Council, the Municipality of Vila Real and other competent entities. Among the suggested measures are surveys of critical points, verification of drainage infrastructures and study of water retention solutions and sediment control.

If approved, the Parish Council must present, within 60 days, information to the Parish Assembly about the actions taken and the measures to be adopted.

The country of deaf ears | By José Figueiredo Santos

This opinion article analyzes the letter from the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, addressed to the Portuguese Parliament regarding the bills from PSD, Chega and CDS on gender identity, which propose reintroducing medical requirements for changing name and gender in civil registration. The author satirizes the tendency of political power to legislate on people's lives without hearing them, comparing the bureaucratic process to an administration that transforms people into categories and requires certificates to prove one's own identity. He argues that disagreeing requires responding to the argument, not attacking the messenger, and that Portugal should honor the international commitments it signed in matters of human rights.
