The president of the United States, Donald Trump, announced Friday night (28th) an agreement that guarantees the US control of Venezuelan oil reserves equivalent to 65 billion barrels. On his social network, Truth Social, Trump stated that the agreement was obtained without any cost to the American taxpayer and that it would more than double the United States' oil reserves.
The agreement was negotiated by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, working in close collaboration with Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, as well as partnerships with the private sector. Rubio and Hegseth secured majority US control over more than 65 billion barrels of proven oil reserves in Venezuela.
Since the US captured and removed former president Nicolás Maduro from power in January, Washington has been trying to secure a stable flow of Venezuelan crude oil for American refineries, seeking to ensure access to these important oil reserves.
