Trump announces "largest oil deal in world history" with Venezuela

CNN Portugal28 August 2026 at 23:59

Trump announced in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, that he had achieved what he classified as the "largest oil deal in world history," established with Venezuela. According to the American President, the agreement provides for obtaining "majority control" over crude reserves.

The reserves in question are estimated at 65 billion barrels of oil. Trump emphasized that this agreement was reached "at no cost to the American taxpayer," suggesting that the United States obtained significant advantages without the need for direct financial investment.

The announcement comes in a context of diplomatic tension between the two countries, given that the United States had previously imposed sanctions on Venezuela. This agreement would represent a reversal of this dynamic, with Venezuela ceding oil control to the United States.
