Lisbon's Historic Elevators: We Reveal the Plans for the Future

CNN Portugal28 August 2026 at 21:02

Lisbon's historic elevators are at the center of plans for the city's future. The Elevador da Glória, one of the most iconic monuments in the Portuguese capital, has been completely rebuilt, including its historic cobblestone pavement.

The reconstruction of the Elevador da Glória represents a significant investment in the preservation of Lisbon's historical heritage. The elevator, which connects Baixa to Bairro Alto, is one of the most traditional and visited means of transportation in the city.

This project comes in the context of a broader plan for Lisbon's historic elevators, which also includes the Elevador de Santa Justa and the Elevador do Lavra. The municipal authorities intend to ensure the maintenance and enhancement of these city landmarks.

The intervention on the Elevador da Glória aims not only to preserve the physical structure of the elevator but also to recover its historical authenticity, keeping alive a tradition that dates back to the 19th century and that is an integral part of Lisbon's identity.
