Teresina is the 16th most populous capital in Brazil, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) estimate. The capital of Piauí concentrates 26.76% of all residents of the state of Piauí, representing more than a quarter of the state population.
The population growth of the city between 2025 and 2026 was 2,320 inhabitants, according to IBGE data. The survey shows that, despite the increase in the number of residents, Teresina's average growth has been showing deceleration.
The state of Piauí has approximately 3.3 million inhabitants, and Teresina remains the main urban and political center of the state. The capital's position as 16th in the ranking of Brazilian capitals reflects a trend of stabilization in the growth of medium and small capitals in the country.
