S&P keeps Portugal's rating unchanged at A+

SAPO28 August 2026 at 21:36

The financial rating agency Standard & Poor's decided to keep Portugal's rating unchanged at the A+ level. This decision maintains the country's credit risk classification at the same level as previously assigned.

The outlook for the Portuguese economy was also maintained as positive by the agency. This positive outlook indicates that S&P anticipates a possible improvement in Portugal's rating in the near future.

The decision to maintain the rating is mainly due to the so-called "resilience of Portuguese economic growth." The agency recognizes that Portugal's economy has demonstrated the capacity to maintain its growth pace even in the face of economic challenges.

However, Standard & Poor's anticipates that Portugal will record a budget deficit during the current year. This deficit projection contrasts with the positive outlook assigned to the Portuguese economy.

⛽ Government reduces discount on ISP on diesel and gasoline

The Portuguese Government reduced the extraordinary discount on the Excise Duty on Petroleum Products (ISP) applied to road fuels, which will result in less pronounced price drops next week. The discount on diesel decreases from 81.61 to 71.63 euros per 1,000 liters, while on gasoline it drops from 53.98 to 51.62 euros per 1,000 liters. This decision comes at a time when the Executive anticipates price drops for both fuels, adjusting weekly the support mechanism for consumers implemented due to the war in the Middle East, which keeps fuels above the ten-cent threshold defined in relation to March prices. The Brent barrel closed this Friday down 0.43%, at $89.31.
