Trump doubles support for refugees, 99% of whom are white South Africans

Público28 August 2026 at 20:04

The government of Donald Trump has doubled financial support for refugees admitted to the United States, at a time when 99% of refugees currently welcomed are white South Africans. This situation arises in a context of a general American blockade on refugee admission.

The Afrikaners represent the only exception to this restrictive policy, being received in the United States under a special program. These white South African refugees will receive a payment of $4,500 to help them settle in the country.

The US refugee policy has been subject to great scrutiny, with the Trump administration implementing significant restrictions. However, white South Africans have been identified as a priority group for reception, benefiting from financial support substantially higher than what was previously assigned to refugees.

This situation raises questions about the criteria for selecting refugees and the reasons why white South Africans are the only group to benefit from exceptions to the restrictive immigration measures of the United States.
