Smartphones prohibited in schools up to 9th grade starting in January

The President of the Republic, António José Seguro, promulgated the law that prohibits the use of smartphones in schools for students up to 9th grade. The new rules will come into effect on January 1, 2027.

Schools will have the first term of the 2026/2027 school year to prepare for the transition and adapt to the new rules established by the law.

The measure covers all students in primary and secondary education up to 9th grade, preventing them from using smartphones during school hours.

The law was officially published, establishing the guidelines that educational institutions must follow to implement this prohibition.
