Jornal O Almeirinense28 August 2026 at 19:54

Miguel Arsénio, athlete from the municipality of Almeirim, achieved this Friday a historic milestone for Portuguese trail running by finishing in second place overall in the CCC race of the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB), a 108-kilometer race considered one of the most prestigious in the world in this sport.

The Portuguese runner completed the course with a time of 10 hours, 27 minutes and 25 seconds, finishing just five minutes behind the winner, Italian Cristian Minoggio. This classification represents the best position ever achieved by a Portuguese person in a 100-kilometer race of the UTMB.

The achievement was highlighted by Filipe Torres, vice-president of the municipal council of Almeirim and also an athlete, who wrote a "glowing tribute" to the athlete on social media, considering that, "in a career with so many astronomical feats, this is probably the greatest of them all."

With this result, Miguel Arsénio wrote a new page in the history of national trail running, demonstrating the growing competitiveness of Portuguese athletes in this type of ultra-distance event.
