The lion club obtained this payout through FIFA's solidarity mechanism, a system that awards compensations to training clubs when their players are transferred. This compensation is due because Sporting was the club responsible for the sporting development of the Portuguese international. Rafael Leão, who currently represents the Portuguese national team, left Milan to join the Turkish club.
The solidarity mechanism functions as a recognition of the investment that clubs make in developing young talents, guaranteeing them a percentage of the value of future transfers. This is not the first time Sporting has financially benefited from transfers of former academy players, reinforcing the importance of their academy in producing high-level players.
