Tuck recalls the "Mateus case": "One of the most painful games for me"

Alto Minho28 August 2026 at 19:00

Tuck, a former Portuguese midfielder, recalled the match between Gil Vicente and Belenenses that was at the origin of the so-called "Mateus case," classifying it as "one of the most painful games" for him. The situation had a special weight because it involved the two clubs that marked his professional career.

The former player represented Gil Vicente for nine seasons in the first team and Belenenses for seven seasons, totaling 338 games in the First Division for both clubs. At Gil Vicente, Tuck reached the First Division, became a starter and captain, helping the club from Barcelos establish themselves in the top tier. At Belenenses, he accumulated nearly 200 games in top-flight football.

The episode triggered a long legal and sporting battle, considered one of the most controversial cases in Portuguese football. Despite the harshness of that period, Tuck looks back at the episode today with some relief at the outcome achieved.

"The most important thing is that it's over and Gil Vicente has already been compensated both sportingly and financially," stated the former player, who after retiring remained connected to football by starting a new phase as a coach. The full interview was published in this week's edition.
