UN Summit in Mongolia Ends Without Global Agreement to Combat Drought

Público28 August 2026 at 17:47

The UN Summit against desertification, known as COP17, took place in Mongolia and ended without a global agreement being reached to combat drought. Negotiations between the participating countries did not reach a consensus on binding measures to address this environmental problem.

The drought agreement was postponed to 2028, when the next summit on the topic is expected to be held. This decision represents a significant postponement in international efforts to establish a coordinated response to the growing drought and desertification crisis.

Despite the lack of a binding agreement, the summit managed to mobilize 1.3 billion dollars for degraded land restoration projects. These funds will be distributed across 23 countries facing severe problems of desertification and loss of fertile soils.
