Elderly woman carried after hospital refuses wheelchair

Notícias de Coimbra28 August 2026 at 18:58

A woman approximately 90 years old was carried by a TVDE driver to reach an ambulance, after a hospital refused to provide a wheelchair. The incident occurred on a Friday and was witnessed by the driver, who decided to help the elderly woman.

The woman was at the hospital and needed to be transported to an ambulance waiting outside. When she requested a wheelchair from the hospital, the request was denied, leaving the elderly woman without a viable means of locomotion.

Given the situation, the TVDE driver who was at the scene offered to carry the woman in his arms to the ambulance. The act of solidarity by the driver allowed the woman to reach the emergency vehicle.

The case raises questions about the care and conditions provided to elderly patients in hospital units, particularly regarding accessibility and physical support for people with reduced mobility.
