Two employees die after contracting malaria at airport

About six Frankfurt airport employees contracted malaria, two of whom died. The disease was contracted at the airport itself after the probable arrival of an infected passenger or cargo.

Health authorities are investigating the circumstances of the outbreak. Malaria is a mosquito-borne disease and is not common in airports in Central Europe.

The affected employees worked in different areas of the airport. The death of two of them raises questions about biosecurity measures at the location.

The case is being treated as an exceptional situation by German authorities. More details about the identity of the employees and the exact origin of the infection have not yet been disclosed.

The municipality of Leiria announced the completion of the analysis of 10,807 applications for support to recover homes damaged by storm Kristin, totaling 69.7 million euros. Seven months after the storm passed, 10,735 requests have already been processed by CCDR Centro, with 7,694 payments made and 310 approvals pending, while 2,731 applications were rejected. Of the 37.3 million already paid, 39.5 million have been validated by the local authority, which invested 813 thousand euros in the operation. Leiria accounts for 30% of national applications, with 70 municipal workers and 107 external technicians involved, 6,070 inspections carried out, and 4,378 in-person attendances completed.
