Chega threatens Government with motion of censure, PS rules it out and IL calls for stability

SAPO28 August 2026 at 18:20

Chega admits it may proceed as early as next week with a motion of censure against the Government, increasing pressure on the executive. The initiative may be presented shortly, according to statements from party officials.

Despite the threat, approval of the text is considered unlikely at this moment. The PS immediately ruled out the scenario of supporting a motion of censure, not intending to enable any initiative in this regard.

The Iniciativa Liberal expressed support for political stability, arguing that the country should not face a governmental crisis at this time. The party positions itself as an ally of the executive.

The PCP, for its part, did not rule out the use of available parliamentary instruments, maintaining a more ambiguous position regarding what it may do.
