The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, promulgated the decree that prohibits the use of mobile phones and other electronic devices in schools up to the 9th grade. The measure applies to all basic education establishments and aims to combat distractions in the classroom.
The decree establishes some exceptions, allowing the use of devices when integrated into pedagogical tools under teacher supervision, or for health reasons and special educational needs.
A plan was also approved that changes measures to combat the lack of teachers in schools. This initiative comes in a context of difficulties in hiring teachers for various subjects and levels of education.
Both measures are part of a set of changes to school legislation that aim to improve the educational environment and reinforce the quality of teaching in Portugal.
