More than 50 thousand book vouchers issued in the 2nd edition of the program, Culture Minister confirms

oRegiões28 August 2026 at 18:05

The second edition of the Book Voucher program has already exceeded 50 thousand vouchers issued, surpassing the numbers of the inaugural edition. The balance was presented by the Minister of Culture, Margarida Balseiro Lopes, during a visit to the Porto Book Fair, accompanied by the Mayor, Pedro Duarte.

The program is aimed at young people residing in Portugal born in 2007 and 2008, allowing each beneficiary to request a 30 euro voucher through the platform www.chequelivro.gov.pt to purchase eligible books at participating bookstores. The second phase closes next Monday.

This edition brought significant changes compared to the pilot project: the support value increased from 20 to 30 euros and the purchase of books with a value equal to or greater than the voucher is no longer required, a limitation that previously existed. In the first edition, which ended in mid-2025, approximately 47 thousand vouchers had been issued, of which 35 thousand were redeemed out of a potential universe of 220 thousand young people.

Regarding the future of the program, the minister referred any decision on continuity to the analysis of an evaluation report to be prepared by the Directorate-General for Books, Archives and Libraries. On the occasion, Balseiro Lopes also praised the organization of the Porto Book Fair given the adverse weather conditions, classifying it as one of the major cultural events in the country.

Evolução e novidades do programa
