Denmark compensates Greenland women victims of IUDs placed without consent

The Danish parliament approved a law providing for compensation of approximately 40 thousand euros for each woman from Greenland who was subjected to the placement of an intrauterine device (IUD) without her consent. The measure aims to recognize the trauma and physical and psychological harm caused to thousands of women and teenagers over several decades. The law was approved by Denmark's legislature, the country that holds sovereignty over Greenland, an autonomous territory located in North America. This vote represents the official acknowledgment of a practice that for decades affected large numbers of Greenlandic women without their knowledge or authorization. The set compensation amount aims to compensate victims for a prolonged period of violations of their reproductive rights and bodily integrity.
