The Saudi club Al-Ittihad has expressed interest in signing Leandro Barreiro, a midfielder from Benfica. The young Portuguese-Luxembourgish player, 24 years old, has been the subject of pursuit by Gulf princes.
Barreiro arrived at Benfica in 2021 from Mainz 05 in Germany, and since then has been an important piece in the red-and-white midfield. His contract with the Portuguese club runs until 2028.
Al-Ittihad's approach comes at a time when several European players have been attracted to the Saudi league, which has been investing heavily in big-name signings. The midfielder, who has already represented Luxembourg, has not hidden his desire to play in competitive leagues.
Negotiations between the clubs are expected to intensify in the coming weeks, with Benfica intending to recover the investment made in the player.
