Chronicle by Alice Vieira | Helps

Chronist Alice Vieira describes her daily observation on the terrace of a café at Praia do Sul, where she sits every day. The café owner has a nephew who often helps him, and the narrator describes him as a great help.

The boy collects the dirty dishes from the tables, asks customers what they want and even gives advice about the day's cakes. Everyone adores him and he never stops working, always with the attitude that there's always a lot to do.

That day, the boy didn't show up and the narrator asked his uncle the reason. The uncle explained that he had a bit of a fever, nothing serious, but that he'd stayed home, lamenting a lot because he thought he was missed at the café.

The surprise of the chronicle is revealed at the end: the boy's name is Manuel and he is only five years old. The narrator guarantees that everything she wrote is strictly true.

Todos os dias, quer chova quer faça sol, eu estou na esplanada do café logo à entrada da Praia do Sul. O meu poiso, como dizem os meus amigos. O dono desse café tem um sobrinho e, de vez em quando, leva-o.

E é uma grande ajuda porque ele, assim que chega, recolhe a louça suja que ainda está nalgumas mesas, pergunta às pessoas o que querem (o que “desejam”, porque ele fala muito bem…) e às vezes ainda dá conselhos, tipo “hoje recebemos uns bolos que são uma maravilha, não quer experimentar?” …

Toda a gente o adora—e ele nunca pára porque, como ele diz, “há sempre muita coisa para fazer…”

Hoje ele não apareceu e fomos logo perguntar ao tio porquê—e ele disse que estava com um bocadito de febre, nada de grave mas, pelo sim pelo não, ficara em casa, “a barafustar imenso, claro, porque, segundo ele, faz aqui muita falta!”

Nós rimos muito e demos-lhe razão, “claro que faz!”, e ficámos a rir uma data de tempo.

Tudo o que eu aqui disse é rigorosamente verdade.

Resta só acrescentar que ele se chama Manuel e tem…5 (CINCO)  anos de idade !!
