West Nile Virus has already killed 39 people in Europe and triggers alarms. Portugal without cases (but with reinforced surveillance)

The West Nile virus is causing a significant increase in concern in Europe, having already caused 39 deaths in the region since the start of the transmission season. The situation has triggered alarms among European health authorities.

Since the start of the 2026 transmission season, 124 affected areas have been identified in 15 European countries, demonstrating the wide dissemination of the virus across the continent. This high number of affected areas concerns public health entities.

Portugal has not registered cases of the disease so far, but national health authorities have decided to reinforce surveillance. This preventive measure aims to early detect any eventual introduction of the virus in Portuguese territory.
