Iceland, more than a decade later, goes to referendum on European Union accession

Iceland will hold a referendum on Saturday to decide whether to resume negotiations for a possible accession to the European Union. This is an important milestone, as the accession process was interrupted more than a decade ago.

The Nordic country is evaluating the possibility of resuming negotiations that had been suspended more than ten years ago. The vote will allow Icelanders to pronounce on the future of relations between Iceland and the European Union.

The Minister of Economy and Territorial Cohesion, Manuel Castro Almeida, stated on TVI's National Journal that the Government did not raise taxes in the two budgets presented and that it will not do so this time either. The official also spoke about the execution of the Recovery and Resilience Plan and clarified the fate of the works that had to leave the scope of the project.
