West Nile Virus triggers alerts in 15 European countries after dozens of deaths. Portugal has no cases

The West Nile virus is causing alerts in 15 European countries, after having caused dozens of deaths in the region. The situation has generated concern among European public health authorities.

Italy, Greece and Spain are the most affected countries, recording the highest number of reported human infection cases, as well as the highest number of deaths associated with the virus.

Portugal remains under epidemiological surveillance, but so far no case of infection by the West Nile virus has been reported in the country. The Portuguese authorities are monitoring the evolution of the situation in neighboring countries.

Baltic countries create joint drone defense force

The countries surrounding the Baltic Sea will create a joint force for drone defense, in a German-led initiative to respond more quickly to the growing threat of hybrid attacks and airspace incursions in the region. The measure comes after several sabotage incidents involving critical infrastructure since 2022 and after the discovery of drones with explosives at Leipzig airport, which serves as a logistics base for NATO operations in Ukraine. The German Interior Minister warned that foreign powers try daily to attack democracy and security within the EU, and that the hybrid threat is "omnipresent". The force aims to facilitate rapid information exchange and enable a coordinated response among the ten participating countries.
