Conservation Units: 25 years of protection and new challenges

oglobo28 August 2026 at 15:30

Brazil currently has more than 3.1 thousand Conservation Units (UCs), which protect 19.1% of the continental territory and 26.5% of the national maritime space. These numbers are considered relevant but still far from the country's expansion potential.

The article highlights two major bottlenecks for the growth and consolidation of these protected areas. The first is the land regularization liability, considered critical for the consolidation of UCs.

The second bottleneck is related to financing mechanisms, which include environmental compensation and the National Policy for Encouraging Visits to Conservation Units. Both need to be improved to strengthen the protection of these areas. The article was exclusive access for subscribers.

Iceland celebrates the referendum to decide whether to reopen negotiations with the EU with a slight lead for the 'yes'

Iceland celebrates a referendum to decide whether to reopen accession negotiations with the European Union, suspended since 2013 and frozen in 2015, when 27 of the 33 chapters had already been opened, except those on fisheries and agriculture. Voting began at the end of July and concludes on August 29. According to estimates from public channel RUV, the yes vote has a slim lead with 53% of the votes, although in the final stretch the percentage has been reduced to 51%, with a high percentage of undecided voters that keeps uncertainty about the result.

Baltic countries create joint drone defense force

The countries surrounding the Baltic Sea will create a joint force for drone defense, in a German-led initiative to respond more quickly to the growing threat of hybrid attacks and airspace incursions in the region. The measure comes after several sabotage incidents involving critical infrastructure since 2022 and after the discovery of drones with explosives at Leipzig airport, which serves as a logistics base for NATO operations in Ukraine. The German Interior Minister warned that foreign powers try daily to attack democracy and security within the EU, and that the hybrid threat is "omnipresent". The force aims to facilitate rapid information exchange and enable a coordinated response among the ten participating countries.
