Author of pension reform study to teach insurers how to transform elderly people's homes into higher pensions

Jorge Miguel Bravo, author of a study on pension reform, will teach a training course at the Portuguese Insurers Association on the topic "The House as an Asset: Monetizing Real Estate Assets". The course aims to teach insurers how to help elderly people convert their properties into higher pensions.

The training will cover strategies for monetizing elderly people's real estate assets, allowing them to obtain additional income from their homes. The program is aimed at insurance sector professionals.

Jorge Miguel Bravo is recognized for his research work on pension system reform. His experience in this area justifies the choice to train insurers on this specific topic. The Portuguese Insurers Association is thus promoting this training to update its members on new approaches in dealing with elderly clients' real estate assets.

EU Agri-Food Sector Consolidates its Global Position in the First Half of 2026

In the first half of 2026, the EU agri-food sector achieved a trade surplus of €23.9 billion, an increase of €1.4 billion compared to the same period in 2025, with exports of €117.2 billion and imports of €93.4 billion. Exports grew to Egypt (+€278 million), Ukraine (+€247 million) and India (+€174 million), but fell to the United Arab Emirates (-€395 million) due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Spirits and liqueurs rose €405 million, while coffee, tea, cocoa and spices fell €1.1 billion. Imports from Brazil increased €425 million, driven by soy, and sunflower seeds doubled after two poor harvests in the EU.

CP bar workers on strike from August 31 for an indefinite period

The workers from Itau, the company that provides the bars and catering service on board CP's Alfa Pendular and Intercidades trains, will begin an indefinite strike starting August 31. The Union of Workers in the Hotel Industry, Tourism, Restaurants and Similar Industries of the South announced the strike in defense of the Company Agreement and against the withdrawal of rights, accusing the company of refusing to comply with the agreement since it took over the concession in April 2025 and of having stopped paying the equivalent of 22 days of meal allowance, causing estimated losses of about 200 euros per worker per month. The union calculates that 18 days of strike have already been carried out in 2025 and demands full compliance with the agreement, restoration of the meal allowance, fair salary increases, and negotiation of a new agreement. The workers also accuse the Government and CP of complicity in the conflict, having refused to meet with union representatives. Protest actions are planned near Santa Apolónia Station in Lisbon on August 31 and near the Secretary of State for Mobility and Transport on September 1.
