A Maine Coon cat born in Illinois, United States, entered the Guinness World Records for having 29 toes, the highest number ever recorded in a feline. The feat was achieved this week, drawing international attention to the animal.
The cat was named Erebus Anomaly, a name that references Greek mythology. Erebus was associated with darkness, a possible reference to the feline's black coat, while "Anomaly" means "anomaly" in English and refers to the genetic alteration responsible for the characteristic.
The genetic condition that causes extra toes is called polydactyly. The animal caught the attention of the caretakers at the Blue Northern Maine Coons cattery right after birth, when Kendra and Hunter noticed the unusual number of toes on the kitten's paws.
