Brazilian woman drowns in US while saving 9-year-old child from river, and body is found on her birthday

Priscila Álvares Pereira dos Santos, a 33-year-old woman from Minas Gerais, Brazil, drowned while trying to save a 9-year-old child who was drowning in the Delaware River in New Jersey, United States. The accident occurred on the afternoon of last Monday (24), near the city of Delran. The child was pulled out of the water alive.

Priscila entered the river after realizing the girl was in danger. According to information released by authorities and published by People magazine, she managed to reach the child and push her toward the shore. Other swimmers pulled the girl out of the water, but Priscila submerged and did not return to the surface.

A fundraising campaign was created by the Brazilian community to cover the cost of repatriating her body to Brazil. The body was found on Priscila's birthday.
