PPM Madeira criticized what it considers to be a "passing the buck" between various entities regarding responsibility for the maintenance of Cristo Rei do Garajau, the oldest existing Cristo Rei monument in the world. The structure, which is in a state of disrepair, has raised questions about who should assume the costs of its conservation.
The party highlights that the monument, located in Madeira, should receive greater attention from the authorities, given its historical and symbolic value. The situation exposes, according to PPM, a lack of coordination between the entities responsible for managing regional heritage.
The central issue concerns the lack of clarity about which organization should bear the costs of maintenance and potential rehabilitation of the monument. This uncertainty has resulted in an absence of interventions to halt the deterioration of the structure.
PPM Madeira publicly questioned the responsibilities of each entity, demanding that a solution be found for the preservation of the monument, which represents an important landmark not only for the region, but for world religious heritage.
