The district of Santarém recorded two scams by simulation of traffic accidents during the first half of 2026, according to data released by the Republican National Guard (GNR). This number represents a decrease compared to the four cases recorded during all of 2025 in the same district.
The GNR warned of the increase in losses caused by this type of crime. Across the country, 30 complaints were registered between January and June 2026, four more than in the same period of 2025, representing a growth of 15.4%. Although it is not one of the districts with the highest incidence, Santarém continues to appear among the territories where this fraudulent scheme has been identified by authorities.
The losses caused by these scams have already reached 72,540 euros in the first six months of 2026, a value very close to the 77,480 euros recorded during all of 2025. The most serious case known this year caused an individual loss of 15 euros, according to the data available in the article.
