Three Portuguese missing after tragedy on border between Tibet and Nepal

DianaFM28 August 2026 at 07:28

At least 472 people died following a devastating flood on the border between Nepal and Tibet. The tragedy was caused by the collapse of an ice mass on a Nepalese glacier, which generated a mud avalanche and devastated the Gyirong pass.

Three Portuguese citizens are missing following this disaster. Chinese authorities temporarily suspended rescue operations due to the overflow of a natural reservoir with more than two million cubic meters of water.

The affected area is located at 2,950 meters altitude, which hindered rescue operations in the initial hours after the catastrophe. The collapse of the Nepalese glacier triggered a chain reaction that hit the Gyirong border pass.
