Jornal Económico28 August 2026 at 08:12

Nvidia, one of the largest listed companies worldwide and leading manufacturer of cutting-edge chips for artificial intelligence, reported results above expectations for the second fiscal quarter. The company reported revenues of $96.2 billion, surpassing the $92.27 billion estimated by analysts, with the data center division reaching $89 billion against the $85.4 billion forecast. Adjusted earnings per share were $2.22, above the $2.09 expected, and the gross margin stood at 75%. For the third quarter, Nvidia projects revenues of $108 billion, but excluded sales to China from this forecast due to uncertainty surrounding export licenses, also forecasting 70% year-on-year revenue growth for the next fiscal year.

In Europe, Pernod Ricard closed fiscal year 2026 with a 3.9% decline in organic sales, to €9.4 billion, below the 3.7% expected by analysts. Recurring operating profit fell 5.2%, to €2.42 billion, still above the -5.9% estimate, while net profit dropped 26%, to €1.2 billion, penalized by weakness in the North American and Chinese markets. The French construction company Eiffage reported first-half results with net profit rising 12.1% and its order book growing 7%, to €31.5 billion, having reiterated its outlook for 2026.

In Portugal, Mota-Engil reported first-half results with net profit rising 24% year-on-year, to €74 million, and revenue increasing 6%, to €2.898 billion. The order book reached a historic high of €17.7 billion, which led investors to react positively, with the company's shares rising more than 3.50% that day. BCP continued to renew 2015 highs, with shares trading around €1.1250.

Venezuela: USA negotiating with country participation in oil fields

The United States is negotiating with Venezuela's interim government to acquire stakes in more than a dozen of the country's oil fields, including the possibility of a 100-year concession, according to Axios and Bloomberg. The talks, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and interim President Delcy Rodríguez, aim to substantially increase US oil reserves and allow greater participation of US companies in the exploration and development of Venezuelan oil assets. Venezuela has the world's largest proven oil reserves, but its production has remained below historical levels due to infrastructure degradation and the economic crisis. The negotiations come after Washington eased sanctions to allow American companies to return to the country.
