Government rejects "micro relocation" proposal for new Lisbon airport

The Portuguese government rejected the "micro relocation" proposal for the new Lisbon airport, advocated by local associations and parishes. The proposed change consisted of moving the airport location by approximately five kilometres.

According to the executive, this change would bring several significant problems. One of them would be the greater impact on classified areas, meaning zones protected by environmental legislation.

The government also pointed out other constraints, namely risks related to birds and problems in airspace. These factors were considered sufficiently serious to justify the rejection of the relocation proposal.

Local associations and parishes had proposed this location change as an alternative to the original project, but the executive maintained its position to proceed with the initially planned location for the new airport.
