Remember him? Messi's team chooses former Argentine national team player as new coach

Messi's Inter Miami announced on Thursday the departure of Argentine coach Guillermo Hoyos and his replacement by compatriot Cristian "Kily" González. The change comes after five games without victory under Hoyos, who was a close friend of Messi and his family. Hoyos had taken over after Javier Mascherano's departure in April.

To replace him, David Beckham's co-owned franchise trusted Kily González, a former Argentine national team player, who will coach Messi with no experience as a coach outside his country. González will effectively take over his duties once he receives the necessary work permits.

Born in Rosario, just like Messi, the former midfielder had been without a club since October 2015, after a brief and unsuccessful stint at Platense. The 52-year-old coach previously managed Rosario Central between 2020 and 2022 and Unión in 2023.

The change represents a risky move for Inter Miami, the reigning champions, who seek to recover in Major League Soccer (MLS) after the negative streak of results.
