Flooding at Porto Airport Due to Rain Causes Cancellations and Delays in Air Operations

Heavy rains on Thursday morning, August 27, caused flooding at Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport in Porto, resulting in eight flight cancellations, seven diversions to other airports and various delays in air operations. ANA Aeroportos de Portugal explained that the showers left debris and water accumulation in the areas surrounding the runway, leading the airport to temporarily limit capacity as a precautionary measure.
The cleaning and drainage of the waters was completed at 12:00, allowing the progressive recovery of airport capacity. The airport manager highlighted that the airport remained operational throughout the incident, continuing to carry out arrivals and departures, and that by 12:30 it was already normalizing its operations.
The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere had placed 11 districts in the north and center of Portugal under yellow warning due to forecast of heavy rain, hail, thunderstorm and strong wind. The affected districts were Viana do Castelo, Braga, Bragança, Vila Real, Viseu, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Porto, Aveiro, Leiria and Coimbra, with the warning valid until 15:00.
According to IPMA, showers were expected, sometimes heavy, occasionally in the form of hail, locally intense precipitation between 10 to 20 millimeters in one hour, hail with diameter less than two centimeters and wind gusts between 70 and 90 kilometers per hour.
A chuva que se fez sentir nesta quinta-feira, dia 27 de agosto, de manhã no aeroporto Francisco Sá Carneiro, na cidade do Porto, no norte de Portugal, levou ao cancelamento de oito voos, à necessidade de divergir outros sete e a atrasos na operação aérea, indicou a ANA Aeroportos de Portugal.
“Devido a aguaceiros intensos no início da manhã que deixou detritos e acumulação de água nas áreas circundantes da pista, o Aeroporto Francisco Sá Carneiro decidiu, por precaução, limitar a capacidade de forma temporária até ser concluída a limpeza e o escoamento de águas”, explicou o gestor aeroportuário.
Na resposta enviada à agência ‘Lusa’, a ANA refere que “a limpeza foi concluída às 12h00, tendo causado a divergência [para outros aeroportos] de sete voos, oito cancelamentos e alguns atrasos na operação”.
Segundo a ANA, “o aeroporto manteve-se sempre operacional, realizando chegadas e partidas, estando neste momento [pelas 12h30] já a recuperar a sua capacidade total”.
O Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA) colocou nesta quinta-feira 11 distritos sob aviso amarelo devido à chuva, que será localmente forte, queda de granizo, trovoada e vento forte.
De acordo com o IPMA, os distritos de Viana do Castelo, Braga, Bragança, Vila Real, Viseu, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Porto, Aveiro, Leiria e Coimbra vão estar sob aviso amarelo até às 15h00 devido à previsão de períodos de chuva ou aguaceiros, por vezes fortes, ocasionalmente sob a forma de granizo.
Os mesmos 11 distritos vão estar também sob aviso amarelo devido às condições favoráveis para a ocorrência de fenómenos meteorológicos localizados, como trovoada, precipitação localmente forte, com acumulação entre 10 a 20 milímetros em uma hora, granizo com diâmetro inferior a dois centímetros e rajadas de vento entre 70 e 90 quilómetros por hora.
