The Venezuelan National Assembly approved on first reading a reform of the law governing the operation of the Supreme Court (TSJ). The vote was held today and gave the 'green light' to the bill, which now goes to additional processing before being definitively approved.
The judicial reform is part of an agreement reached with sectors of the Venezuelan opposition. The pact aims at the renewal of the Supreme Court, the highest body of the judicial power in the country.
The TSJ has been the subject of criticism from the opposition, which questions its independence and alignment with the government. The reform comes in a context of prolonged political tensions between the government and different factions of the opposition in Venezuela.
