The Mitsubishi Fuso factory in Tramagal, in Abrantes, resumes activity after a partial lay-off in July and three weeks of holidays in August, but with reduced daily production. The company may review the production of the eCanter electric truck, since the market is not adopting the vehicle as expected.

The Portugal of Small Ones

This article analyzes the business scale deficit in Portugal as the root of the country's weak productivity, which stands at only 68.2% of the European average. It argues that the Portuguese economy is based on a structure of small and medium enterprises without competitive scale, requiring 36 companies to generate 10 million euros of GDP, compared to only 26 in the largest European economies. The author proposes six measures to reverse this situation: generate urgency and ambition, abandon illusions about internationalization, adopt short-term pragmatism, channel public incentives to companies with greater potential, attract structural foreign investment, and leverage growth through mergers and acquisitions. It concludes that Portugal can choose between remaining a country of small businesses or becoming a country of globally competitive companies.
