A new world record

The United States broke a new economic record by surpassing 40 trillion dollars in public debt, approximately 125% of GDP, with the last trillion accumulating in less than five months, compared to the over 190 years it took for the first trillion. American debt is almost double China's and far exceeds Japan's, although less than a quarter is external debt. The Congressional Budget Office warns that the trajectory is unsustainable, projecting it will exceed 60 trillion in less than a decade, while debt service already reaches 1.4 trillion annually and daily interest exceeds three billion dollars. Interest rates are at their highest levels in 20 years, with 30-year mortgages at 6.6%. Trump's fiscal measures, including taxing inflation-adjusted capital gains, could add up to 950 billion to the debt by 2035, with 70% of the benefits concentrated among the top 1% richest.

The Portugal of Small Ones

This article analyzes the business scale deficit in Portugal as the root of the country's weak productivity, which stands at only 68.2% of the European average. It argues that the Portuguese economy is based on a structure of small and medium enterprises without competitive scale, requiring 36 companies to generate 10 million euros of GDP, compared to only 26 in the largest European economies. The author proposes six measures to reverse this situation: generate urgency and ambition, abandon illusions about internationalization, adopt short-term pragmatism, channel public incentives to companies with greater potential, attract structural foreign investment, and leverage growth through mergers and acquisitions. It concludes that Portugal can choose between remaining a country of small businesses or becoming a country of globally competitive companies.

Portugal executed the RRP. Who was left more resilient?

The article analyzes the execution of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP) in Portugal and questions who was truly left more resilient with the European funds. The analysis suggests that the true measure of the RRP's success does not lie in the volume of money that reached the State, but rather in the lasting capacity it managed to create in companies and in the Portuguese economy after the funds ended.
